Me and my family visited Cleveleys Seawall on Friday and all thought it looked outstanding. What a fantastic job and what a great asset to the area. Best Wishes Debbie

We have developed a erosion protection system that uses waste consumer plastic as its source material. This has a significant affect on reducing the carbon footprint of any project and is very environmentally friendly. Would this be of interest to your scheme and if so who do I direct information.

Response to Kieran Atherton re specification for the stepped revetments.
Kieran, each 16 tonne unit has been precast at the SLP yard at Hillhouse, Fleetwood. The unit were cast using a concrete called Toproc supplied by Tarmac Topmix. This is a very strong and abraision resistant concrete that incorporates microsilica to form a dense concrete. Wyre BC has used this product successfuly on our sea defences for the last 15 years. Each unit has been designed to interlock with its neighbours to reduce the liklihood of a unit being washed out, and the whole structure has been designed to rest on the sub-base under it's own weight - it has been specifically designed not to be pinned down to allow the release of pressure formed under the revetment by the incoming tide. These pressures would normally try to lift the revetment; however the gaps between the units allow for this pressure to be released without damaging the revetment. Each unit has only a small amount of steel in it to prevent it cracking when lifted. Each unit has been designed to be lifted into place using a vacuum lift, which reduces the need for a large amount of reinforcing steel. Using only minimal steel improves the expected life of each unit through corrosion of the steel. For safety, the revetment has been constructed in a number of bays. Each bay is typically 5 or 6 units wide and is seperated by a precast beam running perpendicular to the units. This allows the defences to be compartmentalised so that, should any part of the revetment be damaged by storms, the length of the damage is restricted to a single bay width. I trust that this answers your queries. Paul Long Senior Engineer, Wyre BC |

Response to Barry Deakin. The exposed steel angles you highlight were incorporated to cover the top of the sheet piling along the toe of the new defences. In some areas, particularly on the curve where the angles are manufactured from welded plate, these have become lose/missing. These sections will be removed and the gap between the piles and revetment filled with concrete. This work is programmed to commence next week and will continue when tides are suitable.

What is going to happen to all the rusty metal support sections which are on show at the base of the steps? Are these being concreted over?I think there is a big health and safety issue here and something needs to be done to cove up these dangerous objects. The new promanade has been open quite a while now and I'm supprised there has been no serious accidents.
Concerned, Barry |

hi,
been to cleavleys again today while i had some spare time and the weather was good, the kids loved it as usual, im very disapointed to see access to the camera systems have been removed from the public, i take it some people have made complaints that they are on the images the world has gone mad, political corection is now out of control, do the people who have complained understand that at some point they will be on still pics, cctv in shops, car parks and a other places every single day they leave the house do they have something to hide i wonder i hope the cameras are brought bact to the public domain shortly and normality and senceability resummes, cctv and web cams and other video type survailance are a normal everyday event, i wonder if any of the people who complained about being on the images would complain, if they were being attacked or robbed and it was captured on video or still image, i very much doubt it, a lot of people rely on these picture to keep updated on the work, and the waether and sea/beach conditions regards chris |

reply to
Wyre Borough Council many thanks for the info about the work being done for united utilitys. i had a feeling it may have somthing to do with waste water , as i know there are various tanks etc under ground on the prominade, thanks again for replying to my question, also i would like to say a big thanks for all the new pay toilet facilitys in the area over the years this subject has always been a bit of a bug bear with me as in the past there has been many times when my family has needed toilets only to find none or when we did find any they werte shut. keep up the great work, we as a family love cleavelys and fleetwood, and lytham and saint annes no disrespect to blackpool, but its not been a family resort for many years, so we just drive past many thanks chris |

Response to Chris Hinds.
United Utilities own and operate a wastewater pumping station south of the Cleveleys works. On rare occasions, wastewater is pumped to sea via a long sea piped outfall. Unfortunately this outfall was damaged as a result of the Riverdance ferry running aground last year. United Utilities have employed Volker Stevin to repair this damaged section of pipe. The steelwork you see is the cofferdam structure being erected around the damaged pipe to facilitate repairs. This work is not part of the Cleveleys sea defence works. |

hi,
my self and my family are not from the area, we live in chorley, preston area, but we do like to get up to cleavleys at least twice aweek, im very impressed with the work that has been done, in fact we have all been to cleveleys today, could someone tell me what the work is, thats being done on the shore, my young disabled son and myself aswell were facinated watching steel beams or some sort of piles being driven in to the sand, it looks like some sort of platform is being made,i dont suppose it will be a new peir would it, not quite sure, i couldent quite work out the hight as we didnt want to get too close while there is work in progress. im very intregued as i cant see any refrence to this on the site, the lads certainly put the hours in, it was 8:00pm when we set off back home and they were still working hard i look forward to go up again and see more progress regards chris |

As a lapsed civil engineer, I made a special trip to see the project today (having also been to the M6@50 exhibition at the Museum of Lancashire in Preston - well worth a visit)
It's a super job which will do a lot to put civil engineering firmly in people's thinking - hopefully there will be a permanent board about the project somewhere in due course. Thanks also for the explanation of/thinking about the roughening which is apparent in the inter-tidal area. Well done! DG |
