As a lapsed civil engineer, I made a special trip to see the project today (having also been to the M6@50 exhibition at the Museum of Lancashire in Preston - well worth a visit)
It's a super job which will do a lot to put civil engineering firmly in people's thinking - hopefully there will be a permanent board about the project somewhere in due course.
Thanks also for the explanation of/thinking about the roughening which is apparent in the inter-tidal area.

Well done!

Look's like a great project!! I'm an architecture 3rd year student living in Malta. Is there any way someone could send me a masterplan of this site with the current project? it is a great case study for an urban assignment i have...I just need to know how huge the area we are talking about is... any help would be greatly appreciated.
10x and merry christmas!

As a member of the team that worked on the project I feel very proud to have worked on something which was quite visionary. The completed promenade is very much in keeping with the landscape architects original vision. The project truly was a team effort with many challenges not least the weather and the relentless nature of the tides. I still go there from time to time and it is nice to walk along without having to wear a hardhat! I hope that the yobs who made it their intent to smash everything to bits when it was first opened abate and find something else to interest them.

Lets hope that Phase 4 has every bit of the success and accolades that Phases 2 and 3 have had.

It's great to see the cafe building toilets are now finally open. Even though they cost 20p to use I will use them on a regular basis as Danfo clean them everyday. Good work Birse & WBC.

Response to query from Keith re cameras
The Argus beach monitoring system is undergoing a major upgrade as part of the Cleveleys sea defence works. The system is currently off line but should be back online by Wednesday 11 June. New cameras have been installed close to Beach Road and these are expected online later in the summer - these will provide us with data for the beach in front of the new works.

Response to comments by Derek Barker re erosion of the concrete revetment
As part of the initial design of the new Cleveleys sea defences, the Council and its partners carried out extensive trials on the design of the concrete to be used in the scheme. It was accepted that tidal action on any concrete would cause erosion and the investigations concentrated on reducing this by the use of granite aggregate and a dense concrete mix. In addition, using precast concrete allowed us greater control over the mix design and improved quality control on its use. The design mix eventually approved used a microsilica additive to produce a dense and abrasion resistant concrete and had been used successfully by the Council over a number of years.

With any concrete structure the smooth surface achieved by precasting contains a greater percentage of ‘fat’ and a reduced aggregate concentration. As such the surface of the concrete will always erode quickly and then slow as the tougher aggregate surface is reached. It was anticipated that the stepped revetment would wear in this fashion, particularly at the beach interface – initially it was considered to sandblast the whole revetment to give a consistent look but this was dropped on cost grounds - only the access steps have been treated thus to improve grip, particularly when wet.
It should be noted that the units used on the defences are sufficiently thick to act as a defence even if the whole of the step was eroded away.

Blackpool’s defences use a slightly different strategy as their beach contains significantly less shingle and consequently suffers a reduced abrasion rate. Blackpool use a less abrasion resistant concrete mix and a different stepped profile to take account of their local conditions. Inevitably their revetment will suffer long-term abrasion wear. If you have concerns about Blackpool these should be addressed to them direct.

Can i just update my earlier comments the dozen free parkings spaces are no longer pay and display machines have just been put in place so we now have no free spaces at all , at least twelve families can park near the seawall though this summer even if if does cost them a fortune well done wyre council

JUST NOTICED THE NEW DEFENCES ARE BEING ERODED!!!!!!
While walking down the new prom I noticed that the lower steps of the new prom are being washed away or eroded by the sea water. Is anyone dealing with this problem? It has only been opened a few months and is beginning to look 'aged'.Will the same thing happen to Blackpools new defences?

Response to comments re: parking on North Promenade
Parking on North Promenade is the responsibility of Lancashire County Council; LCC are aware of the traffic problems and are working to install double yellow lines on the seaward side of the road. It is expected that these works will be carried out in early April.

It will transform the promenade into a feature which compares with some of the classic seafronts in cities across Europe. Well done to all those involved.

Well done to the local Council and all involved in transforming the area into a pleasant walkway with plenty of seating, liked the good use of stone pinic seats and tables, which our local council (Salford) would follow you lead. Parking on the front needs sorting, today Bank Holiday Monday, Chaos.

As a promenade resident I think the council and workforce have made an excellent job of the prom. I only hope they are now going to put a parking restriction on the road. Today (Good Friday) the road is now reduced to single file traffic and there a 2 cars parked completely on the pavement. These are people who are too pay for parking and have no consideration for other road users.
